Fettisdagen!
Today is Pancake Day, Mardi Gras, Fastlagstisdagen, Faschingsdienstag etc. but in Sweden we call this day “Fettisdagen”. It’s the last day before lent so we eat a lot of fat food, especially a dessert called “semla”; therefore some people call this day the semla-day since we don’t usually eat them on other days. A “semla” is a bun sprinkled with powdered sugar, stuffed with whipped cream and almond paste. Semlor are eaten in other countries as well, especially in Scandinavian countries, where they are often stuffed with jam and other ingredients.
Most people don’t do lent, I personally don’t know one single Swedish person who does it, but we still like to eat semlor on Fettisdagen. Because we’re greedy. And freezing cold this time of year - food is our only pleasure hah![]()
